Eurostar : Working for five years for the Eurostar PR team, I was lucky enough to cover many of the unusual and test workings, not just for the 'Intercapitals' fleet but for the support locos and units. Nowadays of course Eurostar no longer operates from Waterloo international, but from St Pancras.

Diesels on the Mid Hants : The Mid Hants Railway, a preserved line operating between Alton and Arlesford, has an enlightened attitude to modern image motive power, and periodically allows visiting and home diesel traction to operate. To mourn the recent departure of its Class 117 DMU fleet to the Gloucs & Warks Rly, I am showcasing a selection of images taken over the recent years.

Lower Basildon : The overbridge at Lower Basildon, in the Thames Valley near Pangbourne, has been one of my favourite locations over the years. Never short of traffic, it's situated on the GWR racetrack between Reading and Didcot. The bridge itself is about to be lost as a photographic location (I understand), due to parapet works. The news that Adelante units are to return to the FGW services has prompted me to raid the archives and unearth some shots from this spot, for your enjoyment. I will be searching out a few more gems over the coming few days.

Exeter Rail Fair : The 1st and 2nd May 1994 saw a major railway event in the South West, with the Exeter Rail Fair held in Exeter Riverside Yard to celebrate the Devon city's 150 year association with railways. Reflecting the enlightened approach to enthusiasts at the time, a huge variety of exhibits, special shuttles and railtours operated. The collection you see here were taken at a special photographic preview.

St Pancras yesterday and today : Few London terminii have changed as much as St Pancras. From a slow decay in the 70s and 80s, it has been transformed by the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (HS1) to become the stylish stepping stone for Europe via Eurostar. Here are a few brief snippets from both eras... Incidentally, the shots of Rocket deserve a little explaination. In March 1980, the Post Office decided to commemorate the 150th anniversary of mail being carried by train between Liverpool and Manchester with the issue of five new 1st class stamps (priced at 12p each!!), all with a railway theme. A replica of Rocket lifted into position at the Cambridge St diesel stabling point, and as a press 'event', allowed to steam into the station on 3 March. The photocall was reported in several national newspapers. Elsewhere, Jimmy Carter was US President and mortgage rates were approx 15%!

East Midlands Ranger - 1981 : Talk about a grand day out...in the early 80's, one could buy a East Midlands Day Ranger for just a few pounds, giving unlimited travel across the region. In those days, there was no shortage of interesting motive power. Regretfully, I didn't take that many pictures, but what a great trip with good friends.
