Day out to the Isle of Wight 2012 : Some leave to use up and the possibility of some reasonable weather. My choice was to revisit the Isle of Wight. There is no finer way to get there than the hovercraft from Portsmouth (Southsea). Only 10 mins for the crossing and the distinction of travelling on the only scheduled passenger hovercraft service in the world! Having arrived on the island, the rail service is provided by ex-London Transport 1938 stock. In the winter season, just two 2-car formations provided the service, but with the combined hovercraft and train ticket allowing unlimited trips for the day, lots of opportunities for images were possible.

Spring 2012 : Unexpected fine and warm weather prompted some trips out. The MHR's spring steam event took place on 23-25 March. rather disappointing with only one (rather piddly) kettle visiting. Billed as a gala, it lacked the interest of previous years and attendance as a result was clearly down. Thurs 29 March was however a grand day out. Down to Bishton for the triple Class 50 move to the SVR, then Undy, Westerleigh and finally Compton Beauchamp (near Shrivenham) - all in brilliant weather. On 2 April, a business meeting in London allowed for a few minutes beforehand on the Met line, to catch some of the new S stock units, and the venerable A stock in what must be their last few months of service. These shots were taken with my Canon G9 compact - not really suited for moving subjects, but capable nevertheless. Then, just after the Easter weekend, a few days in Paris with my family. Not brilliant weather but a few shots of interest.

Swanage Diesel Gala 2012 : The annual Swanage Diesel gala, held between 11-13 May, promised so much... Excellent weather and a mouthwatering variety of motive power promised - why can't other lines (Mid Hants - are you listening?) cater for enthusiasts below retirement age in such an enlightened manner. Sadly, all wasn't quite to be, as a rash decision by West Coast Railways, left several planned attractions marooned up north. Nerertheless, a stunning weekend still ensued, as the photos here, all taken on Sat 12 May, clearly show. Many thanks to everyone who made it possible.

Nene Valley Diesel weekend preparation : On the way back down the A1 from a work trip up north, I decided to take a break at the Nene Valley Railway, just in case there were any preparations for the diesel weekend of 19 & 20 may to be observed. I wasn't disappointed - three class 31s,a 47, a 56 and a Deltic. Although the weather was somewhat grey, I was pleased with the shots I got. Certainly not my last visit there.

Summer 2012 : Despite a very miserable start to the summer, some good opportunities ensued nevertheless. In a wet and dismal June, a royal 67 and Britannia on the Alton line, followed within days by 37s on the test train, and a hyper rare run of a class 60 on the Holybourne tanks. The welcome return of 50 027 to the MHR - a proper run is eagerly awaited. Another set of 67s for VSOE filming. Various shots of A stock, now rapidly disappearing from the LU system, and some Virgin Pendolinos at Lichfield TV. Next, some shots of diesel operation on the Dean Forect Railway, taken during a brief family trip away. Finally, before a work day in Manchester, a few minutes viewing the trams in the morning sunshine at St Peter's Square.

The Cornish Epilogue - a tribute to John Vaughan : On Thursday 21 June 2012, I was hugely honoured to be invited by John Vaughan, a railway photographer I have known and admired for many years, to join him on a private charter train in Cornwall, to celebrate the launch of his latest (and last book), Cornwall's Railways. I was lucky to have got to know John in the later 1970s through his RPPR railtours, and through his friendship, went with colleagues on many photographic trips. I'm happy to admit that I learned much of my skill with a camera from John, and I regard him as one of, if not the, finest railway photographers of recent times. In true Cornish fashion, the middle of Summer in the county was marked by torrential rain all day, but the hospitality of the Bodmin & Wenford Railway shone through the murk, and an absolutely fantastic time was had by everyone. These are a selection of the shots from the day. Thank you John - you were, and remain, a true inspiration!
